About Port Arthur Historic Site Cafe

Situated just inside the entrance to the Port Arthur Historic Site, this cafe offers a relaxed spot to pause and enjoy the quiet rhythm of the area. It caters well to visitors exploring the grounds, whether they’re looking for a casual breakfast, lunch, or a light dinner after a day of walking through history.

The menu leans toward approachable comfort food with a local twist—think battered flathead and chips served with a tangy dipping sauce, or a prawn pizza with a subtle kick from chilli and bacon. Coffee lovers find a good selection here, from smooth flat whites to creamy cappuccinos, often paired with a fresh muffin or a small plate. There are options for vegetarians and families, too, including kid-friendly nuggets and chips or a roasted vegetable lasagne.

The atmosphere during a typical visit carries a blend of casual and slightly trendy, with a three-story building offering indoor, outdoor, and bar seating. It accommodates a variety of diners: solo travelers eager to grab a quick bite, families with children making use of high chairs and a kids’ menu, and groups winding down after a tour through the historic site. The space is wheelchair accessible throughout, making it welcoming to all.

People often appreciate the straightforward service model, combining counter orders with a practical setup for takeaway and delivery. The setting feels grounded rather than hurried, a place where the bustle of tourism softens into calm moments over coffee or a simple meal. Parking is convenient here, adding to the ease for visitors planning a relaxed stop within the historic surroundings.

Great experience. Excellent facilities. Excellent friendly helpful staff. Dog friendly. Enjoyed a full day exploring the historic buildings. Very informative for all. Well done.

Not bad place to have a bite. Cafeteria styled eatery where one takes the items from the cabinets (e.g. heated stuff like fish and chips and cold stuff like sandwiches), and you also order some mains and drinks from the counter.

This is such a beautiful yet eerie place. Facilities are extensive and well presented, equipped and maintained. A 20 minute harbour cruise is included with our entry fee, well worth the money we spent.

Port arthur was number 1 on experiences i had going to Tasmania. The history, the guides and the atmosphere is unmatched. Though the history is sad, it's very enlightening. There is a 3 story modern Cafe at the entrance now with at least 3 different toilet locations in the building. With cosy of entry you get a free cruise around dead man's island. A well informed man spoke about the history of the church up on the hill also. I 100% recommend you go see it.

Great place to visit. The historical stories are fascinating and very interesting. It must have been quite a terrible place to have been incarcerated as an early colony days convict. The site is spread over quite an area and quite a few hours can be spent roaming from one building/ruins to another. The scorpion rock lookout is worth the short walk up and provides a nice view (although partially obstructed by trees) over the church and some parts of the site. The boat trip is included and is free with entry, and although the $30 optional fee for the 40 minute tour of the Isle Of The Dead is about steep but I felt it was worth it to get a better understanding of why they chose the location, as well as burial priorities, plot location and adornment was very interesting.

Food is good and value for money. There are 2 cafes in this place and you have variety of choices. Staff are friendly. There are lot of seating areas. Service is quick. Food is fresh and tasty. Indoor and outdoor dining areas available. Usually this is very busy. But staff take care of the guests. You don't need to book for seats. It is better to dine at this place before or after visiting this historic place. Because other restaurants are bit far way.
